4 Steps For Finding the Right Career Fit

Many people struggle with finding their calling. As humans, we have many interests, and it’s hard for some of us to just choose one to dedicate most of our time and energy to. And what if you haven’t found anything that interests you enough to make it a career? Maybe you don’t know what you are good at, or what would fit into your lifestyle. If you are in need of some guidance for choosing the right career fit, try following our 4 steps!

Take Career Assessments

Did you ever have to take those personality tests in middle school or high school? What about those career assessment ones? Although they may have seemed silly, there are actually some really good tests out there to look into. They can help you narrow down your choices and help you define your interests. Make sure you use reliable career assessment tests, that get you similar results no matter how many times you take them. Once you have the results, use them to self-reflect and as a starting point for your career search.

Find the Overlap

You want to have a career that you can excel in and that you have fun doing. Think about what you are good at. What kind of skills do you possess? Are you good at speaking with others and fostering relationships? Are you a quick writer? Then consider what you like doing. Maybe you enjoy making videos or helping people out during tough times. Do you see any overlap between what you are good at and what you like doing?

You can use your past experiences as a tool. What did you like doing at your old job? Were you really good at completing a certain task? It’s important to know your values, passions, and skills so you can find the right career fit.

Speak to a Mentor

Speaking with mentors might be the best path to take. They are there to give you guidance and help boost your career. There are different types of mentors out there. Some of them cost money, some can advocate for you at work, and others just freely share their advice from their own past experiences.

Take Time and Flexibility Into Account

What does your ideal schedule look like? Are you a morning or afternoon person? How much time do you plan on dedicating to your career? Do you want a remote or office job? Are you willing to relocate? These are all really important questions to ask yourself when looking for the right career fit. You might need to be more flexible with your first job, but there are all sorts of options out there!
