How to Plan Vacations as a CAT Adjuster

No matter how much you enjoy your job, everyone should take advantage of vacation time each year. This is to regain mental and physical strength in order to prevent burnout. Once your batteries are recharged, you can keep excelling in your career. Being a CAT adjuster can be a very stressful job, and it can take a huge toll on your emotional state. You are one of the first responders to catastrophes, and most of the people you deal with are in some of their worst states. You deserve that break.

Natural disasters are never planned, but some of them can be predicted. However, they could happen at any moment and you have to be ready to get deployed immediately. So, how do you plan a vacation correctly? We have outlined some tips below.

What Does a CAT Adjuster Do?

When a catastrophe hits, CAT adjusters come to the scene and assess the property damage for an insurance client. Then, the adjusters report to the insurance company, and they figure out how much insurance coverage the insured should receive. You investigate specific claims by speaking to people to gather information, and by evaluating if the property damage is caused by the disaster or by regular wear and tear.

As we mentioned earlier, you always have to be prepared for deployment. Natural disasters don’t always announce themselves before showing up, and you have to be ready to travel at a moment’s notice. You may receive dozens of cases before you even arrive at the scene. It’s hard to tell how long you will be deployed for, since you work for as long as you are needed.

Be Aware of the Seasons

Each season brings opportunities for different catastrophes. But some months are busier than others. For example, March through August is the hail season. Severe storms happen during March through May. Texas averages 50 days of thunderstorms each year. Tornadoes can occur at any time of the year, but they mostly occur during March through June. Most tornadoes in the United States occur in Texas. Lastly, hurricane season lasts from August to October.

As you can see, CAT adjusters have tons of work in Texas all year round. However, natural disasters begin to die down during the winter months. Our advice is to plan a vacation between December and March. You can take a vacation at any time of the year, but you will miss big opportunities for employment. Additionally, if you decide to take a week off during one of your deployments, you will not be allowed to return to the assignment. You’ll have to wait for another catastrophic event to occur.

Communicate Your Absence

One of the perks of being an independent CAT adjuster is that you essentially work for yourself. But you are probably still working closely with an independent adjuster firm. Show off your communication skills and let them know you will be unavailable a month in advance. This is also a great opportunity to remind the firms that you exist, which will pave the way for future deployments.
