To become a successful claims adjuster, there are several characteristics you need to thrive. Here at 2021 Training, we’re giving you our best advice to help you identify and improve these traits– as well as an action plan to kick start your claims adjuster journey.
But before we get started, what exactly does an insurance claims adjuster do?
Insurance Claims Adjuster
A claims adjuster is an insurance agent that investigates the gravity of a claim. This person is responsible for investigating the property damage and personal injury claims to determine how much the insurance company should pay for the loss.
But what makes someone an exceptional claims adjuster? Find out, below!
1. Empathy
In order to be the best claims adjuster you can be, it’s important to remember why you’re embarking on this profession in the first place. Do you love working with people? Do you have a heart for serving others? If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track!
Claims adjusters work with people all day long. It can be tiring, yet extremely rewarding work. We’re in the business of serving others. This is an honorable thing, especially when trying to help claimants and witnesses that need assistance during a tough time. Remember that your job is to help people, and try your best to always be patient and understanding
2. Set and Keep High Standards
This characteristic is beneficial in any position! After you know your “Why” behind taking up claims adjusting, the next step is to set standards to keep yourself accountable. As an independent adjuster, you will have more freedom than a typical 9-5. As you grow in your career, you will be responsible for setting and maintaining your own standards.
Throughout your career as a claims adjuster, it’s possible and likely that you will be tempted to lay aside your values. Whether it comes in the form of bribery, cutting corners, or receiving pushback from contractors– it’s important that you hold yourself accountable. Be a person of integrity and refuse any offers to steer you off track. Compromising on these basic ethics could cost you your job, or worse.
Instead of worrying about what not to do, we recommend focusing on being the best claims adjuster you can be. Serve your claimants, witnesses, and colleagues with zeal. Once you set the bar high, others will rise to meet it.
3. Determination
So we’ve listed a few traits here that will get you off to a good start. Determination and grit will keep you going.
Like any new skill, learning the craft of claims adjusting requires time, energy, and patience. Challenges will inevitably crop up, and it will be up to you to decide to be proactive. If you find yourself in a stressful situation, will jump in to help out? Or will you complain about the stress?
It’s up to you to be professional and choose to have a good attitude. Tackle the challenges as they come, and you will get to the light at the end of the tunnel with each situation. And every time you overcome, you become better equipped.
4. Proper Insurance Adjuster Training
Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without including proper training!
