Getting Started
You inspect damage — roofs, homes, vehicles, commercial properties. Document what you find. Determine what the policy covers. Write an estimate. Settle the claim. You're the person who shows up after the storm, the fire, the accident. You represent the carrier and make sure the insured gets what the policy says they're owed.

No. The courses are built for people starting from zero. Construction background helps you move faster but isn't required. If you have none, get the Smart Start+ package — it includes Basics of Construction.
Texas pre-licensing: $179. Florida: $229. Smart Start bundles: $408 (TX) / $458 (FL). Plus state application fees and fingerprinting paid directly to the state.
Most students finish coursework in 1-2 weeks. You have 90 days. Add a few days for fingerprints and state processing. Many are fully licensed within 2-3 weeks.

Licensing
All-Lines covers everything including workers' comp. P&C covers everything except workers' comp. The difference is small. We recommend All-Lines.
Independent = represents the carrier. Public = represents the insured. Different licenses, different roles. Our courses prepare you for the independent adjuster license.
Yes. Texas and Florida both have reciprocity with most states. Get licensed in one, apply for reciprocal licenses elsewhere without retaking coursework. This is why these two licenses are the most popular in the country.
Some states don't require a separate license. Having one from a reciprocal state still gives you credibility with IA firms and carriers. Contact us for the current list.
In most cases you apply for a reciprocal license using your existing credentials. Each state has its own application. No course retake needed.
Xactimate
The software carriers and adjusters use to write damage estimates. Industry standard. If you adjust claims, you need to know it.
Nobody teaches you on the job. Day One, they expect you to open Xactimate, build a sketch, price repairs, and submit a clean estimate. Our course takes you from zero to confident.
Level 1 (baseline), Level 2 (advanced), Level 3 (instructor). Dave holds Level 3. The course prepares you for Level 1 and 2 exams and earns up to 15 CE credits.
Continuing Education
24 hours every 2 years. Minimum 12 hours classroom equivalent. We have 10+ courses. We report completion to TDI within 2 business days.
Within 12 months: complete CE requirements + late fee. Longer: may need to retake pre-licensing. Contact us with your situation.

Career
Staff adjusters: $45K–$75K+ depending on experience and region. Independent cat adjusters can earn significantly more during storm deployments, but the work is seasonal. Practical Adjusting covers compensation models in detail.
Get on IA firm rosters. They're the companies carriers call when a storm hits. We have firm listings and application guidance in our Resources section.
If you want flexibility, decent income, no degree requirement, and the ability to work nationally — yes. If you want a predictable 9-to-5 with no travel — probably not. The work is real. The storms are real. The people you're helping are going through something hard.
