How to Get a Job at an IA Firm as a New Insurance Adjuster After Licensing
Here’s how to get started once you have your license in hand.
Completing your Texas or Florida insurance adjuster license is the first big step toward an exciting new career. But once you’re licensed, what comes next? For many new adjusters, the challenge isn’t passing the course—it’s landing that first opportunity. At 2021 Training, we don’t just prepare you for the exam. We also give you the insider knowledge you need to stand out, get hired, and build a rewarding adjuster career.

Step 1: Apply to the “Big 4” Independent Adjusting Firms
The Independent Adjusting Firms (IA Firms) are the companies that insurance carriers rely on to staff adjusters for claims—especially after natural disasters, when demand spikes.
The largest firms, often called the “Big 4,” are where many new adjusters get their start. These firms represent the biggest insurance carriers, and they’re usually the first to deploy new adjusters. Getting on their rosters means you’ll be in line for deployment opportunities when storms, floods, or hurricanes strike.
Pro Tip: Apply to all four firms, not just one. Each has its own client base and deployment needs. Being on multiple rosters increases your odds of being called up quickly.

Step 2: Cast a Wider Net – Apply to 20+ Additional IA Firms
Once you’ve applied to the Big 4, don’t stop there. To maximize your chances of landing assignments, you’ll want to apply to at least 20 more IA firms.
There are dozens of smaller and mid-sized firms across the country. While they may not handle as many claims as the Big 4, they’re often quicker to respond, more personal in their hiring approach, and may give new adjusters their first shot in the field.
Pro Tip: Keep a spreadsheet of every firm you apply to. Track your applications, recruiter contacts, and any follow-ups. Organization is key when you’re juggling multiple opportunities.
Step 3: Start Networking Like a Professional
In the insurance adjusting world, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Networking is one of the fastest ways to get noticed by IA firms.
Attend Industry Events & Conferences: Catastrophe expos, insurance training events, and industry meetups are excellent places to meet recruiters face-to-face.
Join Adjuster Associations: Organizations like NACA (National Association of Catastrophe Adjusters) or regional adjuster groups can connect you to valuable contacts.
Be Persistent & Professional: Introduce yourself, follow up with recruiters, and stay active in professional forums. First impressions matter.
Remember: Everyone starts at the bottom. The adjusters with the most successful careers are the ones who kept showing up, networking, and staying ready for deployment.
Benefits of Working with an IA Firm
Why apply to IA firms instead of waiting for a direct hire with an insurance company? For most new adjusters, IA firms offer:
Flexible Work: You’ll be deployed when claim volumes rise and can enjoy downtime between events.
Career Variety: From hurricanes to hailstorms, you’ll see a wide range of claims.
Nationwide Opportunities: Many IA firms work across state lines, giving you a chance to travel and build experience.
Ongoing Support & Training: Firms provide additional training, mentorship, and technology resources to help you succeed in the field.
At 2021 Training, our courses are designed with these firms in mind. We prepare you with the licensing and skills that IA firms look for in new hires.
